Open 4 Business - The NEW Reliable Controls HQ |
October 18, 2012 |
|
The new Reliable Controls® HQ was officially opened at a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 18th.
The event was well attended by local dignitaries and individuals close to the project. The 8 million
dollar annex to the existing Reliable Controls® building is a targeted LEED Platinum facility that will be
instrumental in showcasing Reliable Controls® products. The origins of the new Reliable Controls®
HQ date back to a feasibility study conducted in June of 2008, and after completing schematic
designs and submitting development permits, the shovels finally hit the dirt in April of 2011.
Flash forward to October 18th, 2012, and the building’s official opening. With the threat of rain
hanging over the freshly cleaned courtyard between the pre-existing North wing and new South
wing, the opening ceremonies were moved into the North wing’s recently vacated R&D area. Well
over 100 invited VIPs and Reliable Controls® personnel filled the cozy space to listen to master of
ceremonies and Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Tom Zaban, and the assembled
guest speakers. Throughout the one hour ceremony a vivid portrayal of the green building movement
was painted – from last century’s pipe dream to today’s necessity – with speakers often conveying
a sense of urgency and proud ownership. To all in attendance, the new facility was framed as one
small accomplishment toward a global retooling of the construction industry and ultimately a step
toward reversing the wider act of unbridled consumerism.
After the official ribbon cutting ceremony, the attendees were divided into smaller groups and
escorted by tour guides through the entire Reliable Controls® facility, stopping at 13 LEED learning
stations manned by experts in the pillars of green building techniques. LEED topics included an
accounting of the targeted LEED credits in the arenas of Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy
and Atmosphere, Material and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality. Attendees came away
from the event with a concrete understanding of the design and construction principles used to
create the building and how the building’s LEED status is verified by an independent third party. The
following day saw a well-attended general Open House for family, friends, and neighbors. Going
forward, the LEED learning stations will be the centerpieces in self-guided tours of the facility for
parties interested in witnessing the green building movement first-hand.
For a comprehensive account of the new building, an overview of the Triple Bottom Line approach to
green building, and the Reliable Controls HQ LEED scorecard, please visit...

Controlling the Cup |
July 12, 2010 |
|
At one time in the not too distant past, FNB Stadium was a somewhat bland soccer facility
lost in the Seweto sprawl and known only to the rest of the world as the site of Nelson
Mandela’s first speech in Johannesburg after his historic release from prison. And so the
dusty stadium would have remained, but when South Africa was awarded the 2010 FIFA World Cup,
an extensive make-over was in order. Indeed, even the name would change as the outdated FNB
Stadium received a complete make-over to the tune of 1.5 billion rand.
For the lion’s share of June and July, the 94,000 seats of the newly-named Soccer City Stadium
will be a vibrant flood of patriotic colors amid the hum of swirling vuvuzela horns. At the
center of the action is the striking exterior of the refurbished stadium – designed to have
the appearance of an African pot; the cladding on the outside is a mosaic of fire and earthen
colors with a ring of lights running around the bottom of the structure, simulating fire underneath
the pot.
An important component of the ground-breaking make-over of FNB Stadium included the installation
of a Reliable Controls® MACH-System by our
South African Authorized Dealer, Redbase Systems.
|
|
 |
With a mixture of environments and large-scale needs, Soccer City Stadium was loaded with an
impressive list of conditioning equipment that includes 347 water source heat pumps, 134 fans,
14 air handler units, and four computer room units. The main plant room was populated with four
cooling towers, and four secondary condenser water pumps controlled on differential pressure.
Desmond Cory, a member of Redbase Systems, describes the MACH-Global as the workhorse of the
installation, "We have two fully-loaded MACH-Global controllers. We are using the two subnetworks
on the one MACH-Global controller to pick up the MACH2, MACH1, and MACH-Zone
controllers."
The entire installation is BACnet® which allows for integration into a third-party’s
electrical power controls system.
Congratulations to Desmond Cory and his team for a winning job on the world stage.

Reliable Controls® Amoung Victoria's Leading Technology Firms |
February 19, 2009 |
|
The Victoria Advanced Technology Council recently unveiled its top-25 companies for 2008,
and once again, Reliable Controls is a proud member of this elite list.
Known locally as the VIATeC 25, the annual list is comprised of the largest -- by revenue
-- tech companies headquartered or founded in Victoria. Altogether, the companies on the
VIATeC 25 employ nearly 2,500 people and posted combined revenues in 2008 of $763 million,
a figure down slightly from 2007 revenues of $866 million. The median average revenue of
the companies on the list is listed at $13.3 million, a slight increase from last
year's $13 million.
"We didn't see any real surprises on the list this year, but we were glad to see the
median average climb. We expected, based on some acquisitions and reporting changes,
there might be a decrease," said VIATeC executive director Dan Gunn. "We were pleasantly
surprised to see the companies not affected by recent acquisitions actually had a
phenomenal year and grew by over $100 million."
Reliable Controls is honoured to be a member of this prestigious list and thrilled
at the opportunity to play a role in growing the Vancouver Island high-tech sector's
overall revenues to $1.7 billion, making technology the number one private revenue
producing industry in Greater Victoria. "The advanced technology sector in our region
has shown dramatic growth in both revenues and employment, outpacing the provincial
average for over a decade," said Gunn.
VIATeC also recently announced the results of its 2008 Food Bank Challenge which raised
a record $222,000 for the Mustard Seed Food Bank, bringing to $869,000 the total raised
over the last six years. Over the last two years, Reliable Controls has been a major
player in the organization of the VIATeC Floor Hockey Tournament that has raised over
ten thousand dollars for both the Mustard Seed Food Bank and the Boys and Girls Clubs
of Greater Victoria.
Founded in 1989, VIATeC is the conduit that connects people, knowledge, and resources
necessary for growing a successful technology sector in Greater Victoria.

Big New Projects: Potomac Yard in Arlington, VA |
March 11, 2008 |
|
At the gateway to the US capital, the Potomac Yard complex in Arlington, Virginia encompasses 2.5 million square feet of office space,
1,600 new residential units, and 188,000 square feet of restaurants, shops, and services. Potomac Yard blends a careful mix of uses
with thoughtful open space, parks, and high-quality street retail. National Gateway is the centerpiece of the Potomac Yard complex
with office, retail, and residential construction.
Arlington County is one of America’s strongest office markets, with a base of eleven million square feet leased primarily to
government agencies and government contractors.
|
|
 |

 |
|
National Gateway is conveniently located in Arlington County, only five minutes
from Washington DC, and provides close proximity to the Pentagon and Reagan National Airport, as well as many successful companies
such as Boeing, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, PBS, and Booz Allen Hamilton. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently signed
a lease for 420,000 square feet to start the first buildings at Potomac Yard.
National Gateway is one of the few mixed-use projects inside the Metropolitan DC Beltway able to accommodate large corporate users
in a location that is visible, accessible, and convenient for both tenants and their clients.
Peter Haber from Pritchett Controls was instrumental in winning Phase I & II at the National Gateway at Potomac Yard in Arlington,
VA. The new construction project has a total of six phases which we will pursue. Phases I & II consists of software and approximately
600 VAV boxes and controls for an estimated 20 Air Handler Units.
National Gateway I and II are located near the main entrance to the Jefferson Davis Highway and adjacent to south-end retail and
residential areas, and Center Park. The modern, clean look of the building with subtle nods to the art deco period provides outstanding
architectural interest yet promises to remain a classic throughout the years. National Gateway I and II are both 9 storeys, 23,564
and 22,632 square feet respectively. |

Get the Lead Free Reliable Controls® |
November 25, 2005 |
|
To extend our commitment to a clean and safe environment, both inside and outside of our facilities,
Reliable Controls® is aiming to have a lead-free production process by the end of 2006. To achieve
this goal, we have purchased a reflow oven capable of handling the hotter temperatures required for
lead-free soldering. The installation of the new oven is scheduled for November and will also require
power upgrades to our production facility. Because there are additional steps required to complete the
transition to lead-free soldering, we will continue to run our current processes until the production
environment is fully prepared to make the transition. In the meantime, we will be purchasing equipment,
testing new methods with sample material, and working with our suppliers so we can effectively transition
to lead-free soldering. These changes will not affect the delivery or production of Reliable Controls®
products, but will help to promote an environmentally friendly atmosphere.

2004: Another Great Year |
February 7, 2005 |
|
2004 has proven to be a year of excellent growth
for Reliable Controls®. Sales have increased 42%
over 2003. Shipments of microprocessor-based
products averaged over 1,000 units per month
throughout the year. Growth was better than
expected in all regions with Eastern USA and Eastern Canada showing exceptionally
strong sales. Thank you for making 2004 another great year!
2004 DEVELOPMENTS -
Continuous product development and new
product releases highlighted the year for
Reliable Controls®. RC-Studio 2.0 was
released with an updated look and a new
feature-set that includes BACnet® support
and animation. After gathering a host of
recommendations from our Dealer Network,
the SMART-Sensor LCD was developed
and released. New SNMP and BACnet®
functionality was added to the ETHER-Link
and MACH-Global, both of which have been
submitted to the BACnet® Testing Labs.
2004 also saw the development and release
of the MACH-Air Halomo, a significant
improvement to the motor design of the
controller. There were also improvements
made to our line of software products, such
as the audit trail feature in RC-WebView
and BBMD and SNMP in RC-Toolkit. Key
decisions were made and development
undertaken on the next generation of
controllers, code-named Pyramid. Perhaps
the single largest development in 2004 was

DDC-Online lists the Reliable Controls® MACH-System |
May 7, 2004 |
|
DDC-Online provides unbiased information on Direct Digital Controls (DDC) and an easy searchable guide to DDC manufacturers.
The Reliable Controls® MACH-System has now been included in DDC-Online's Manufacturers Product Listing.
Due to the complexity and proprietary nature of DDC systems, it has become difficult to stay current with the designs,
installations, operation and maintenance of DDC systems. DDC-Online was developed specifically to help building owners
and consulting/specifying engineers with these issues.
Both generic and specific information on DDC systems can be found including:
-
- basic introduction to DDC and the terms used in the industry
- detailed listing of DDC system architectures, hardware components and software associated with DDC systems from the prominent national manufacturers
- detailed publication on input and output processes of DDC systems.
A generic framework of the various components and configurations used in current DDC systems has been defined.
This framework provides information on DDC manufacturers in a consistent format so readers can easily compare
their relative features and benefits.
The Iowa Energy Center developed this web site in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy Office of
Building Technology, State and Community Programs (DOE-OBT), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)
and Facility Dynamics Engineering.
The Reliable Controls® listing provides building automation specialists
a source for comparing the Reliable Controls® MACH-System to other manufacture specific data on DDC systems.
Reliable Controls is committed to quality technology,
excellent technical support and innovative products.

MACH-Air & MACH-Zone Pass BTL |
September 22, 2003 |
|
The BACnet Testing Laboratories (BTL) have officially recognized the MACH-Air and MACH-Zone controllers as
meeting the requirements necessary to bear the BTL mark as Application Specific Controllers. Satisfaction of
the testing requirements means these
two products are now listed on the BACnet International Web site with the ‘BTL Listed’
designation: BACnet International Product Catalogue.
The BTL designation means these two controllers are recognized as being ‘BACnet® compliant’ for use in
interoperable or native BACnet® installations. BTL recognition places Reliable Controls® on the cutting edge
of building automation product development and validates Reliable Controls’ commitment to providing BACnet®
solutions throughout the entire Reliable Controls® MACH-System.
The BTL provides product testing services for BACnet International. Products are tested for conformance to the BACnet® protocol
as defined by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The BACnet® protocol
defines a standard for communication within the building automation industry. When different manufacturer’s products implement
the BACnet® standard, information may be shared between the products in a seemless fashion. Think of the possibilities enabled…
the office worker of the future may gain access to a building via a card reader. The card reader shares the access information
with the components of a building automation system that may turn on the lights required to light the way to the individual’s
office, enable the HVAC system to condition the temperature of the office, and direct the Closed Circuit TV system to inform
the security officers of the presence of the worker. The possibilities are endless for the automated building of the future.
