Reliable Controls® Amoung Victoria's Leading Technology Firms February 19, 2009

The Victoria Advanced Technology Council recently unveiled its top-25 companies for 2008, and once again, Reliable Controls is a proud member of this elite list.

Known locally as the VIATeC 25, the annual list is comprised of the largest -- by revenue -- tech companies headquartered or founded in Victoria. Altogether, the companies on the VIATeC 25 employ nearly 2,500 people and posted combined revenues in 2008 of $763 million, a figure down slightly from 2007 revenues of $866 million. The median average revenue of the companies on the list is listed at $13.3 million, a slight increase from last year's $13 million.

"We didn't see any real surprises on the list this year, but we were glad to see the median average climb. We expected, based on some acquisitions and reporting changes, there might be a decrease," said VIATeC executive director Dan Gunn. "We were pleasantly surprised to see the companies not affected by recent acquisitions actually had a phenomenal year and grew by over $100 million."

Reliable Controls is honoured to be a member of this prestigious list and thrilled at the opportunity to play a role in growing the Vancouver Island high-tech sector's overall revenues to $1.7 billion, making technology the number one private revenue producing industry in Greater Victoria. "The advanced technology sector in our region has shown dramatic growth in both revenues and employment, outpacing the provincial average for over a decade," said Gunn.

VIATeC also recently announced the results of its 2008 Food Bank Challenge which raised a record $222,000 for the Mustard Seed Food Bank, bringing to $869,000 the total raised over the last six years. Over the last two years, Reliable Controls has been a major player in the organization of the VIATeC Floor Hockey Tournament that has raised over ten thousand dollars for both the Mustard Seed Food Bank and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Victoria.

Founded in 1989, VIATeC is the conduit that connects people, knowledge, and resources necessary for growing a successful technology sector in Greater Victoria.

Big New Projects: Potomac Yard in Arlington, VA March 11, 2008

At the gateway to the US capital, the Potomac Yard complex in Arlington, Virginia encompasses 2.5 million square feet of office space, 1,600 new residential units, and 188,000 square feet of restaurants, shops, and services. Potomac Yard blends a careful mix of uses with thoughtful open space, parks, and high-quality street retail. National Gateway is the centerpiece of the Potomac Yard complex with office, retail, and residential construction.

Arlington County is one of America’s strongest office markets, with a base of eleven million square feet leased primarily to government agencies and government contractors.

National Gateway is conveniently located in Arlington County, only five minutes from Washington DC, and provides close proximity to the Pentagon and Reagan National Airport, as well as many successful companies such as Boeing, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, PBS, and Booz Allen Hamilton. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently signed a lease for 420,000 square feet to start the first buildings at Potomac Yard.

National Gateway is one of the few mixed-use projects inside the Metropolitan DC Beltway able to accommodate large corporate users in a location that is visible, accessible, and convenient for both tenants and their clients.

Peter Haber from Pritchett Controls was instrumental in winning Phase I & II at the National Gateway at Potomac Yard in Arlington, VA. The new construction project has a total of six phases which we will pursue. Phases I & II consists of software and approximately 600 VAV boxes and controls for an estimated 20 Air Handler Units.

National Gateway I and II are located near the main entrance to the Jefferson Davis Highway and adjacent to south-end retail and residential areas, and Center Park. The modern, clean look of the building with subtle nods to the art deco period provides outstanding architectural interest yet promises to remain a classic throughout the years. National Gateway I and II are both 9 storeys, 23,564 and 22,632 square feet respectively.

Get the Lead Free Reliable Controls® November 25, 2005

To extend our commitment to a clean and safe environment, both inside and outside of our facilities, Reliable Controls® is aiming to have a lead-free production process by the end of 2006. To achieve this goal, we have purchased a reflow oven capable of handling the hotter temperatures required for lead-free soldering. The installation of the new oven is scheduled for November and will also require power upgrades to our production facility. Because there are additional steps required to complete the transition to lead-free soldering, we will continue to run our current processes until the production environment is fully prepared to make the transition. In the meantime, we will be purchasing equipment, testing new methods with sample material, and working with our suppliers so we can effectively transition to lead-free soldering. These changes will not affect the delivery or production of Reliable Controls® products, but will help to promote an environmentally friendly atmosphere.

2004: Another Great Year February 7, 2005

2004 has proven to be a year of excellent growth for Reliable Controls®. Sales have increased 42% over 2003. Shipments of microprocessor-based products averaged over 1,000 units per month throughout the year. Growth was better than expected in all regions with Eastern USA and Eastern Canada showing exceptionally strong sales. Thank you for making 2004 another great year!

2004 DEVELOPMENTS - Continuous product development and new product releases highlighted the year for Reliable Controls®. RC-Studio 2.0 was released with an updated look and a new feature-set that includes BACnet® support and animation. After gathering a host of recommendations from our Dealer Network, the SMART-Sensor LCD was developed and released. New SNMP and BACnet® functionality was added to the ETHER-Link™ and MACH-Global, both of which have been submitted to the BACnet® Testing Labs. 2004 also saw the development and release of the MACH-Air™ Halomo, a significant improvement to the motor design of the controller. There were also improvements made to our line of software products, such as the audit trail feature in RC-WebView and BBMD and SNMP in RC-Toolkit. Key decisions were made and development undertaken on the next generation of controllers, code-named Pyramid. Perhaps the single largest development in 2004 was the purchase and renovation of our new facilities. With the move to our new location in October of 2004, we will all benefit from streamlined processes and space to grow.

MACH-Air & MACH-Zone Pass BTL September 22, 2003

The BACnet Testing Laboratories (BTL) have officially recognized the MACH-Air™ and MACH-Zone™ controllers as meeting the requirements necessary to bear the BTL mark as Application Specific Controllers. Satisfaction of the testing requirements means these two products are now listed on the BACnet International Web site with the ‘BTL Listed’ designation: BACnet International Product Catalogue.

The BTL designation means these two controllers are recognized as being ‘BACnet® compliant’ for use in interoperable or native BACnet® installations. BTL recognition places Reliable Controls® on the cutting edge of building automation product development and validates Reliable Controls’ commitment to providing BACnet® solutions throughout the entire Reliable Controls® MACH-System.

The BTL provides product testing services for BACnet International. Products are tested for conformance to the BACnet® protocol as defined by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The BACnet® protocol defines a standard for communication within the building automation industry. When different manufacturer’s products implement the BACnet® standard, information may be shared between the products in a seemless fashion. Think of the possibilities enabled… the office worker of the future may gain access to a building via a card reader. The card reader shares the access information with the components of a building automation system that may turn on the lights required to light the way to the individual’s office, enable the HVAC system to condition the temperature of the office, and direct the Closed Circuit TV system to inform the security officers of the presence of the worker. The possibilities are endless for the automated building of the future.
