Reliable Controls Business Development Executive for Australasia

Tell us about your path into the controls industry.

I started in the industry as an apprentice electrician in 1986. From there I worked installing mechanical electrical and building management systems, first commissioning and then programming and engineering building management systems. I taught controls modules for electrical apprentices in college and worked in different countries and on several systems during this time. I spent the past 12 years working for a Reliable Controls Authorized Dealer in Canberra.

How does building automation make a difference in the world?

The built environment has a large contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, and we spend such a large part of our lives inside. Through building automation, we control and optimize energy consumption to lower greenhouse gas emissions and energy use. While doing this, building automation systems play an important role in comfort and air quality in the built environment. 

Describe your role.

My role as Business Development Executive for the Australasia region is foremost to be the link between Reliable Controls and the end users of our systems. This means a strong collaboration with the Authorized Dealer network, consultants, engineers, and customers to ensure satisfaction among all these parties. 

What do you like about working with Reliable Controls?

What I admire most about Reliable Controls is its dedication to sustainability. I like the way the whole ethos has sustainability at its core, regardless of what part of the business you’re dealing with.

What does sustainability mean to you?

I believe we are a crucial point with the way humanity is using Earth’s resources. Until individuals, companies, and governments set this as the highest priority, we will always be playing catch-up. All of us must try as best we can to achieve a sustainable existence for everybody.

How does Reliable Controls help customers achieve sustainability with buildings?

Through the ART of Building Sustainability, Reliable Controls sets out nine steps to help customers achieve sustainability. These include a commitment to backward-compatible products, integrated real-time analytics, sustainable resource management, and expert global support.

What sets Reliable Controls apart from other brands in your region?

To me, the Authorized Dealers are a huge differentiation. The dealer network I have been involved with for many years is filled with skilled and committed people who really want to make a difference and are doing so. I have found them to be like-minded in my belief of how important a role we all play in the building automation sector and how important this industry is globally.

What about your job do you enjoy most?

Helping others. In the role I enjoy meeting and working with people from all aspects of our industry. Through these interactions I enjoy sharing ideas and experiences, be it with technicians through to consultants, and I also love learning from them. There is a wealth of knowledgeable and experienced people in this industry, many of whom are happy to share with each other given the opportunity, and this is a very positive thing.

Define success.

You have to enjoy the work you do and believe it has a positive impact regardless of your profession. 

What else are you passionate about?

I enjoy swimming and cycling. I enjoy the calmness and disconnection from everything else when open-water swimming. I also have a golden retriever, who is in many respects this man’s best friend.

Dare to dream: Is there something you’d really like to accomplish?

I would one day like to do a cycle tour of Southeast Asia.
