The Bureau of Reclamation is the largest wholesaler of water in the United States and the second largest producer of hydroelectric power. Since 1902 the bureau has constructed more than 600 dams and reservoirs, including the Hoover Dam and the Grand Coulee. The Ephrata Field Office, a four-story office building in Ephrata, is one of three field offices in Washington State.

Authorized Dealer Skyline Automated systems installed a Reliable Controls building automation system during a retrofit of the Ephrata Field Office.

Skyline replaced the existing control system with as little downtime to the facility as possible. The mechanical equipment included boilers, cooling towers, circulating glycol pumps, and heat pumps. Skyline installed a MACH-ProZone controller on each of the 29 heat pumps and another 15 for heat-pump-zone return-air temperatures, fresh air fan systems, bathroom exhaust fans, and humidifiers. Networked hardware also included a MACH-ProWebSys controller, a MACH-ProPoint expansion module, and 29 SMART-Sensor devices.

Some of the older heat pumps did not have enough head pressure to actuate their reversing valves, causing compressors to trip on high pressure. Skyline used Control-BASIC programming to allow the compressors enough runtime to build sufficient pressure before switching to cooling. Skyline worked closely with a mechanical contractor and facility managers on this project.
