Influenza virus subtype H5N1 virus, or avian influenza, was first detected in humans in 1997. Since then H5N1 has been detected in poultry and wild birds in 50 countries. Human infections have sporadically emerged in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East and are associated with severe disease and death. Most human infections occur after prolonged close contact with infected birds, with only rare human-to-human spread. Indonesia has reported more human cases of H5N1 than any other country.
Reliable Controls Authorized Dealer PT Deltamas Solusindo worked with the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and the World Health Organization in 2011 to retrofit 15 hospital rooms across Indonesia for airborne-infection isolation rooms.
PT Deltamas Solusindo installed MACH-Stat, MACH-Air, and SMART-Space Controller devices to monitor power, temperature, relative humidity, pressure, and special air-handling units in the retrofitted facilities.
“By developing such airborne-infection isolation rooms, we hope that hospitals can offer better treatment for patients infected by the virus so that we can reduce bird flu-related deaths,” said Indonesian health minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih at the opening event in 2011.
The increased clean airflow system is separate from the hospital’s other air ventilation mechanical equipment, making the rooms effectively isolated from the rest of the hospital.
Despite ongoing global efforts to control the disease, avian influenza remains a serious public health threat. In 2013 BMC Public Public Health reported the case-fatality rate from H5N1 in Indonesia was a frightening 83 percent.
