The Dubuque Country Courthouse was built in 1891 in the Beaux Arts style, named after the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where many prominent US architects studied at the turn of the twentieth century. A 190-foot-high central tower is capped with a 14-foot bronze statue of Lady Justice. Over the years the courthouse has been renovated several times, including the addition of a glass-walled elevator, a granite fountain on the third floor, and gold leafing on the dome of the central tower.

Authorized Dealer FM Controls installed a Reliable Controls building automation system during a retrofit of the building’s HVAC system.

The courthouse was added to the US National Register of Historic Places in 1971, which meant FM Controls had to complete its work with minimal disturbance to the aesthetics of the building—a challenge because the limestone walls are up to 4 feet thick in some areas.

The networked hardware in this project included 120 new hydronic heat pumps. FM Controls used SMART-Space EnOcean Accesspoint devices with wireless signaling to provide temperature sensing in offices, courtrooms, judges’ chambers, and jury/lawyer waiting rooms. The Reliable Controls system is also used to monitor water consumption in the facility’s geothermal system, with reports sent monthly to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
