Establishment Labs is a high-tech medical device and aesthetics company that develops and markets innovative silicone breast implants. The company manufactures at two ISO-compliant sites in Alajuela and was the first Costa Rican company to go public on the US stock exchange. Solar panels offset a fifth of Establishment Labs’ energy load, and offices are cooled with chilled beams rather than air-conditioning equipment. Establishment Labs sells products in 80 countries, with Brazil its strongest market.
Reliable Controls Authorized Dealer Solmatec installed a new building automation system during a retrofit of the B15 Establishment Labs facility in Alajuela.
Solmatec connected a MACH-ProWebSys controller to three MACH-ProZone controllers via BACnet MS/TP to control and monitor HVAC equipment and expanded the system with three MACH-ProPoint modules.
Twelve application-specific split units control the temperature in two production areas. Each has a dedicated fresh-air fan, dehumidifier, extraction fan, and HEPA filter to meet the demanding conditions involved in manufacturing medical devices.
The retrofit was completed in three phases. The Reliable Controls system was used to operate the old mechanical equipment during the early phases; once the contractor decommissioned existing equipment, Solmatec installed the new controllers, and the Reliable Controls system took control again.
The versatility of Reliable Controls allowed Solmatec to complete the retrofit without manufacturing downtime. Reliable Controls and Solmatec are pleased to have provided Establishment Labs with infrastructure that meets its social responsibility goal of operating as efficiently as possible.
