Project Profile: Berry Architecture + Associates

The building that houses Berry Architecture + Associates and Roth Hrywkiw Fidek chartered accountants in Red Deer, Alberta, has an interesting history. Once the Red Deer Bowladrome, the facility is now an impressive LEED Gold–certified office building that features open spaces with natural light, energy-efficient mechanical equipment, rainwater collection and reuse, and a green roof. The original 1950s two-story building received an addition in the 1970s; when the new owners took over, the entire facility needed a new building envelope and roof as well as new electrical and mechanical systems—not to mention an aesthetic makeover.

During the retrofit, Reliable Controls Authorized Dealer Independent Control Services Ltd. installed a Reliable Controls system that features a MACH-ProWebSys building controller, two MACH-ProPoint expansion modules, and 40 MACH-ProAir controllers, which each include a flow sensor and onboard damper motor. The built-in workstation and web server on the MACH-ProWebSys save operating expenditures and allow the facility manager to access the building automation system from anywhere over the internet.

In addition to the Reliable Controls devices, the networked equipment in this project includes a third-party air-handling unit and humidifier, two condensing boilers, and solar panels. Facility managers track and log water consumption, which is reduced with the ability to collect rainwater for toilets. The solar panels reduce natural gas consumption.

This project demonstrates that updating a modest-sized building can have a significant impact on the environment. The space is comfortable to work in, pleasant to visit, and respectful of the environment, and it nicely illustrates how to marry beautiful, functional, and sustainable design.
