Algoma University is located on the site of the former Shingwauk and Wawanosh Indian Residential Schools. The university partnered with the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association, which includes formers students of the schools, staff, descendants, family, and friends, to create the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre, a cross-cultural research and education project. The partners work together with survivor groups, churches, educators, First Nations, and others to research, collect, preserve, and display the history of residential and day schools in Canada.
Authorized Dealer S. & T. Group installed a Reliable Controls building automation system during a retrofit of the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre.
This is a large building control project with 281 Reliable Controls hardware products, including MACH-Pro2, MACH-ProAir, MACH-ProCom, MACH-ProWebCom, MACH-ProSys, MACH-ProView, and MACH-ProZone controllers and SMART-Sensor EPD devices, that control a boiler plant, hot-water coils, return air ducts, and variable air volume zones served by a variable refrigerant flow system. All 155 MACH-Pro devices used in the building are BTL Listed BACnet Building Controllers that allow data sharing, alarm and event management, scheduling, trending, and device and network management using the BACnet protocol. The SMART-Sensor EPD devices empower building occupants to take control of 10 parameters related to their space.
To integrate Reliable Controls devices with third-party products during the installation, S. & T. Group used the flexibility of RC-Studio software, an all-in-one engineering tool that provides a multivendor, multiprotocol integration solution. S. & T. Group also installed RC-Archive software, which provides the centre with full control over its data. RC-Archive delivers a robust, dependable record of building performance with continuous downloading of data logs to a SQL database.
To improve building sustainability and the client’s return on investment, S. & T. Group leveraged the long warranty on Reliable Controls devices as well as their repairability and reliability. The team overcame some challenges with integrating the third-party variable refrigerant flow system by developing code that allowed the new building automation system to run seamlessly and efficiently.
Reliable Controls and S. & T. Group are glad to contribute to this important project in one of the oldest buildings in the Sault Ste. Marie area.
