Echoing the grand apartment towers the Upper East Side is known for, 135 East 79th Street is a luxury residential building constructed in 2014. Designer William Sofield used carved stone, hand-laid brick, cast ironwork, and oversize windows for the exterior in the pre-war style. Amenities for the 32 large apartments and penthouses include a landscaped private courtyard, fitness center, residents’ lounge with catering kitchen, and games room overlooking the garden.
Authorized Dealer Certus installed a Reliable Controls building automation system during construction of 135 East 79th Street.
The heating system has pressure relief valves that convert high-pressure steam to low-pressure steam, which a heat exchanger converts to hot water. Hot water is pumped through the building using two variable speed pumps. The cooling system consists of a water-cooled chiller, four variable-speed circulating pumps, and an evaporative cooling tower. Each apartment has dedicated hot and chilled water fan-coil units.
Certus connected the controllers using a hybrid fiber-optic and Ethernet backbone to form a robust, high-speed automation network. The Reliable Controls devices provide a powerful, flexible system that facility managers use to maximize operational efficiency and energy use in the building.
