The MidAmerica St. Louis Airport in southern Illinois, 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of St. Louis, Missouri, opened in 1997 and operates as a regional hub, servicing passenger and cargo needs. With parallel runways, the airport can handle simultaneous takeoffs and landings in all conditions and today has an annual capacity of 200,000 operations.
Authorized Dealer Integrated Facility Services installed a Reliable Controls building automation system during a retrofit of the MidAmerica St. Louis Airport in 2003–2005.
The mechanical system in the facility included seven air-handling units, one chiller, four pulse boilers, a makeup air unit, an enthalpy wheel, heat pipes, a chilled water coil, and gas heating. Over three phases, Integrated Facility Services retrofitted the building automation system to install Reliable Controls devices that controlled the makeup air unit, boilers, and air-handling units.
Before the retrofit, the building automation system ran 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, driving up operating costs and causing unnecessary wear on equipment. After the installation, the mechanical equipment ran only when required. Integrated Facility Services provided the facility with an intuitive graphical user interface that allowed building operators to see for the first time exactly how their makeup air unit was designed to work. Using the facility’s existing local area network, the Reliable Controls system allowed facility managers to benefit from real-time data, near-instantaneous feedback on equipment performance, and the ability to conduct rapid diagnostics.
