Casey Crown, Reliable Controls Business Development Executive for California, is a passionate advocate for advancing opportunities for women in the field of building automation, striving for a more inclusive and inspiring future for the industry.
One of her recent contributions was her participation in the Women in ASHRAE Leadership Symposium in Chicago last fall. We were proud to be a Silver Level sponsor of the event, supporting four amazing women in our Authorized Dealer network—Jennifer DeSierra, Jo-Anne MacLean, Kendall Zolman, and Lucy Baker. The symposium brought together women professionals from across the building automation and HVAC industries to share knowledge, experiences, and encouragement.
“Attending the ASHRAE Women's Leadership Symposium was a truly transformative experience,” said Casey. “It exceeded all my expectations in every way. I was particularly impressed by the open, honest conversations that took place—there was a genuine sense of camaraderie that allowed us to engage freely, without the fear of politicizing our discussions or tiptoeing around sensitive topics. I left feeling inspired and motivated, and I’m excited to continue attending in the future.”
Casey’s approach to her work is rooted in her belief in giving back to the industry. “I believe strongly in paying it forward—teaching others has helped me solidify my understanding of building automation and sales,” Casey says. This philosophy underscores her efforts to mentor and uplift others, creating a ripple effect of knowledge-sharing and empowerment.
Casey’s involvement in the Women in ASHRAE Leadership Symposium left a lasting impression on attendees. Here are some testimonials from participants who were touched by the experience.
“Attending the Women in ASHRAE conference was inspiring, collaborative, and supportive, and I am very grateful I was able to attend. Being a woman in this industry can be isolating and lonely, so it was refreshing to gain knowledge and support from others who have experienced similar struggles and hurdles. I learned so much! Speakers discussed a wide range of topics, from new AI products hitting the market to managing your position’s key performance indicators for a review, but the informal discussions were the most rewarding. I was able to not only gain specific ideas on how to deal with current issues I’m facing but also left feeling buoyed by the advice and support that was palpable throughout the entire conference. Together we can make the industry a more welcoming and inclusive environment, and that starts with us.”
“This Women in ASHRAE Symposium gave me a chance to listen and learn from women who have worked hard to prove themselves and grow into roles that are significant in this industry, whether becoming a business owner or chief engineer or managing their own business branches. My favorite session was learning to manage both competence and confidence as a woman in a male-dominated field. I was able to recognize the value of speaking up and being bold in conversation but also embracing the nature of empathy that naturally comes with being a woman and a mom. Both qualities are going to be valued and can lead me far in my leadership endeavors.
“I encourage more events like this to happen in the future, not only to build fellowship among women in this industry but to also provide a beacon of hope for younger women and even mothers like me who are interested in entering a male-dominated industry. Conferences like this are proof that we can achieve anything we set out minds to.”
"When Reliable Controls extended an invitation to the Women in ASHRAE event at the ASHRAE Region X chapter conference, I was unsure whether I would feel out of place since my role is less technical than engineering. My anxieties quickly dissipated as it was one of the most supportive few days of my life. Casey Crown and the other women partners extended such warm advice and shared experiences that will stay with me forever. The efforts of Reliable Controls as a company to inspire and encourage inclusion in an industry where there is a mixed bag of reactions around women has inspired hope in me and in the other women who attended the event. With efforts like this, we will ensure a future where gender is no longer a topic of discussion or discourse, and we all can aspire, unfettered, to be whatever we want in the HVAC industry and abroad!"
Casey’s leadership and our sponsorship of initiatives like the Women in ASHRAE Leadership Symposium highlight our commitment to empowering women in building automation. By fostering an environment of inclusion, mentorship, and support, Casey and Reliable Controls are helping shape an industry where everyone—regardless of gender—can thrive. Together, we’re building a future of innovation and excellence.
