5 things we learned at AHR Expo
AHR Expo is always a highlight for the Reliable Controls team. Here's what we learned this year.
Enterprise building automation systems are integrated platforms that help you monitor, control, and optimize building operations in multiple facilities, often from a central location. Unlike standalone building management systems, enterprise solutions provide scalable, networked control across a portfolio of buildings, whether they’re in the same city or spread out globally.
Reliable Controls and our Authorized Dealers around the world deliver trusted enterprise solutions that help organizations manage their buildings efficiently and sustainably, no matter their complexity or geographic location.
These three enterprise projects showcase what’s possible when you work with people and technology you can rely on.
An 11-year installation proves the benefits of backward compatibility
Located just north of Union Station and the US Capitol Building, Constitution Square spans an entire city block in the heart of Washington, DC. Three 12-story LEED-certified office buildings accommodate thousands of government and private-sector employees, several Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) rooms, and Class A office space for a mix of private-sector tenants with green space and integration to the adjacent Metro rapid transit station. All three buildings include first-floor retail space and below-grade parking.
Authorized Dealer Pritchett Controls installed a Reliable Controls building automation system to control the base buildings and tenant mechanical systems in buildings two, three, and four at Constitution Square over six massive construction projects that began in 2008 and were completed in 2019.
The span of development for this project highlights the benefit of backward compatibility built into all Reliable Controls products. Over the course of 11 years, Pritchett Controls seamlessly integrated two generations of Reliable Controls devices without the need to replace thousands of existing controls simply because a newer-generation product wasn’t compatible.

Smart city-scale control with solar integration and energy savings
Gold Coast is Australia’s sixth largest city, home to over 635,000 people and host to more than a million visitors each year. City buildings include sporting venues, aquatic centers, libraries, community halls, offices, and art galleries. Since 2014 Reliable Controls Authorized Dealer Austec Building Automation has been a preferred supplier to the City of Gold Coast in Queensland, maintaining and servicing building automation across 16 facilities in the city’s portfolio.
In addition to connecting multiple independent control systems into an enterprise website that empowers city managers with scalable control from a single point of access, Austec devised a way to shed peak demand for electrical consumption at the Gold Coast Aquatic Center, which has a 312 kW photovoltaic solar system on the roof but no batteries for excess energy storage.
Austec integrated the photovoltaic system and the pool’s heat pumps using MACH-Pro1 controllers, allowing the pool to “overheat” slightly when solar energy is abundant; as a result less energy is needed to heat the pool in the evenings. This strategy saved 12 percent on energy bills. Many of the sports venues in the city’s portfolio use natural ventilation, which contributes to energy efficiency as well.
Bringing arts and culture together under one intelligent system
The City of Arts development, a project of the Panama Ministry of Culture, is dedicated to developing and strengthening arts and culture in Panama City. Its seven buildings provide facilities for the National Ballet of Panama, the National Symphony Orchestra, the National Institute of Culture, the National Council of Writers, the National School of Dance, the National School of Plastic Arts, and much more.
The City of Arts is expected to house educational, exhibition, and collection spaces for an estimated 20,000 people per year, including 5,000 youth.
Reliable Controls Authorized Dealer Copanac installed a new building automation system during construction of the City of Arts complex to control HVAC, lighting, power generation, heat pump, fire alarming, and security equipment. Today facility managers can efficiently manage the automation system over the internet using RC-WebView software, an easy-to-use browser-based solution that combines the power of enterprise tools with a simple interface. RC-WebView is ideal for sites like this one with multiple internet-connected buildings; it provides the ability to handle alarms in bulk, schedule a campus of buildings at once, define user roles on a directory server, and more without compromising performance.
